John Hamm's Teaching Portfolio

My Background

I was born and raised in a small harbor town on the shore of Lake Ontario in NY. My family’s business was real estate development and rental properties. I worked with my father as a boy, learning property management.

I began training in Okinawan Karate at 13. By the age of 18 I was a black belt running classes and teaching young students. I stayed with the school until I was 27, when I moved to Florida. I continue to train on my own.

My first real teaching experience was at 23: I was hired by a local community college to teach a semester of Karate. I was hired four days before classes started, and developed a curriculum from scratch. It was a great experience and convinced me that teaching was in my future.

I now teach freshman composition and literature for Daytona State. My goal is to help students learn how to use writing to successfully communicate their ideas and research.

I try to be active in the community too. I am a member of the Daytona and Deland Young Professional Group, which helps young professionals network and participate in the community. For example, we recently volunteered to help out the Keep Deland Beautiful clean-up day.
